Skin Inc. as a name already implies the brand takes a certain business-like approach to skincare. Others in the category may choose to convince customers with warmth and fuzziness, but Skin Inc says: let’s be serious. Skincare is a science, not a hug. As a brand, it does contrive to soften the harshness of that message with a more delicate palette and visual identity, which is designed merely as a backdrop for their core focus on the devices and products rather than to be an asset in and of itself. The brand promise is to take the guesswork out of skincare with a personalisation story that, at times, now risks feeling indistinguishable in a category where many players seem to promise the same. What Skin Inc does have, however, to justify its “one-size-fits-me” philosophy is the fact that it was one of the first to offer premium custom skincare and devices. Originality has value in a world of pretenders. The brand could work harder in conveying this. In fact, the brand identity sometimes sinks into pleasantness rather than distinctiveness. A sense of vibrant individualism - in colour and personality - does begin to emerge more in their products and physical stores than in other touchpoints, but applying this emotional overlay more widely wouldn’t go amiss and might even help build more premium equity. In other words: my skincare should be more about me, but I am more than my skincare. For a brand that is about taking control, it could be a playful tension to sometimes let loose the people in the skin.
