Blackbough has attempted to weave the country’s tropical wanderlust into their swimwear, which is predominantly sold in the United States. The Philippines, perhaps not as well known as it should be for having some of the finest beaches in the world, has also struggled to compete with nearby destinations, like Bali, when it comes to having shaped its own unique “beach” subculture or way of being. As such, the brand aims in the right direction, but misses when it comes to building around what it defines a uniquely Filipino “tropical soul” and leans a little too heavily on familiar tropes.
